Bristile Roofing La Escandella Curvado in a blend of Tossal, Trans Roja, Bottle Green, Cobalt Azul, Azul

The Mediterranean and Californian cues of an almost century-old home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs were an instant allure for owner Linda.

Despite the original home requiring major renovations, preserving the heritage character of the home became a top priority for the owners. Featuring arched doors, entryways and windows, along with barley twist columns and wrought iron detailing, its unique details were progressively recreated by Giles Tribe Architects to establish a relaxed family home, hailing from the villas of South America, Spain, Italy and the French Riviera. Fireplaces, bevelled glass sliding doors, windows, and bathroom elements were also restored and used to meet the ultimate brief; to construct an elevated version of the existing home.

“For the exterior, this meant referencing original design cues such as rendering, barley twist columns, arches and colourful curved terracotta roof tiles,” says Linda. “We researched all elements of the house extensively so that the house could be created as faithfully as possible to its roots.”

Though the coloured tiles from the 1930s roof needed replacing, they became a necessary feature of the new build. In six shades of blue, green and terracotta, the curve of the original tiles imbued an organic tranquillity across the home, drastically augmenting its street appeal.

“It was important to recreate the roof as faithfully to the original [as possible],” says Linda. “The Bristile Roofing La Escandella Curvado tile was the only choice as it met all the criteria.”

After seeing a sample palette that emulated the previous colour scheme, it was clear to Linda that the roof would look exceptional. “In fact, we added a roofed gate house so that the tile would feature at street level also,” she says.

An additional consideration for the rooftop material was its resistance against the erosive conditions of the home’s saltwater surroundings. But with durability and longevity embedded into the design from the outset, the roofing needed no more proof of quality. “We are hoping that the La Escandella Curved tiles serve the house for its next 100 years!”
